Paul's Fruit Markets began as a produce shop on one side of a brick and mortar shop located on Barrett Avenue in 1945. On the other side of the shop was a butcher. In the back, fruit baskets were made for delivery. Then, the open air markets began as a way to provide the freshest possible produce in St. Matthews. That was the ticket to really building Paul's as we know it today. The open air markets still remind one of the markets of Europe where most people shop daily for fresh fruits and vegetables.
